Word of the Week

By 25 August 2025No Comments

Due to Sorry business I was unable to do a post last week. This week we will learn two new words, enjoy.

wi’nam – pandanus

The wi’nam is a very versatile plant. The fruit, leaf bases, cabbage-like tips and seeds could all be eaten. The leaves were used for weaving; dead trunks used for rafts and the core of the stem used for making green dye. Its core, white stem and cabbage like tips were also used as an antiseptic, analgesic and for treating dysentery and diarrhea.

yi’gi’bin – reed

Yi’gi’bin leaves were used for weaving. The young shoots could be eaten raw or cooked and the underground roots (rhizomes) were also eaten. Dried stems could be ground into flour and the hardened sap could be eaten fresh or toasted.
