As we head into winter, lets look at the words used for the changes in the weather. Indigenous seasons all over Australia are different to what we have grown up with. Some parts of Australia have up to 6 seasons which are guided by the land.
Here on Butchulla country we have two main seasons. Mid-September to Mid-March is Ngurooingan which is warm and wet. Mid-March to Mid-September is Walai-walai djau which is cool and dry.
It does seem that our weather forgot to look at the dates though as we are experiencing Burandu (windy) Yurung (rain) at the moment.
