Welcome to word of the week, I am starting off with two words that describe our local Island and the Sandy Strait.

K’gari – The traditional name for Fraser Island, pronounced Gari. The island was given its name from its creator Yindingie the rainbow serpent. Yindingie had a helper, a beautiful white spirit named K’gari. When she saw how beautiful the Bay was, she did not want to leave but, she could not stay as the spirit. Yindingie told her to lay down on the rocks in the sea and he turned her into the beautiful island.

Korrawinga – The Great Sandy Strait. This is the area between K’gari, all the small islands and the mainland between River Heads and Double Island Point.
